At age 80, Wally White passed away in the quiet of his home. Missing him deeply and remembering him lovingly are his children and their spouses, Kiki and Jeffrey, Jennifer and Wyatt, William and éağlayan; grandsons Holden, Tristan, Jonatan; brother Ed and family; and foreign exchange daughter Lulu.
Wally was born in Newton, Massachusetts to William and Tony White, the younger of two sons. As the two boys grew up together, Eddie led Wally on various mischevious adventures. In one caper, the boys attached firecracker wicks to lit cigarettes, giving them time to scamper home, where their mother found them "sleeping" innocently in their beds when neighbors called to complain of the noise. Another trick was to trap a cat between a screen door and front door so the unsuspecting resident would be surprised by a terrified feline bolting into their home. However, Wally sneaked back to release the cat, prompted by his tender-hearted love of animals.
After graduating from Gamaliel Bradford Senior High School in Wellesley in 1954, Wally flew in the U.S. Air Force and earned the honor of distinguished cadet. While in the Air Force, Wally was particularly proud of the aircraft he flew, the North American B-25G Mitchell and Boeing KC-97 Stratotanker used in refueling operations with B-52 aircraft. When flying smaller planes, Wally delighted in following coutours of cumulus clouds.
In 1958 he married Veda Jeanne Hosman in Lubbock. Texas, and together they had three children. Wally earned a B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Nebraska, but neither the Air Force nor engineering were the right fit. Veda asked Wally, "What DO you want?" He replied that he wanted to be a doctor. Wally started medical studies at Southwestern Medical School in 1963. Thus began his lifelong dedication to medicine; Wally had found his passion.
Wally had a dedicated and distinguished career in private practice, and he volunteered countless hours. As a pillar in the Denver medical community, Wally's life work was highlighted by an array of honors:
Teaching Awards
Community Service Awards
Wally's passion for medicine and service motivated him to continue practicing pediatrics the rest of his life. He volunteered his skills at Inner City Health Center and Samaritan House Clinic.
Deeply principled and intellectual, Wally gave generously of his time and energy to efforts he deemed to contribute to the betterment of people, both in his local community and further abroad. Wally worked with Beyond War, political causes, and was very involved with South Park Community Church and Wellshire Presbyterian Church.
In his personal life, Wally loved nature! Most family vacations involved camping, hiking, exploring ghost towns and enjoying the diverse flora and wildlife of the majestic Rocky Mountains. He enjoyed fly fishing trips with son William and adventurous jeep rides in the mountains. The small family cabin in South Park was filled with laughter, play, and memories. Several years he cheered for his three children running the Georgetown to Idaho Springs half marathon. This past decade, Wally derived enormous pleasure being "Grampy" to his three grandsons.
Thank you, Dad, for all that you have given to this world in your lifetime!
Tally-Ho!
In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution in Wallace's memory may be made to one of the care-givers listed below. These are both organizations that share Wallace's vision of caring for others, and he devoted countless hours of his own time to both.
