Wallace Mackenzie

July 31, 1931 — June 20, 2018

Bruce was born on July 31, 1931 and died from pulmonary fibrosis on June 20, 2018. His full name was Wallace Bruce MacKenzie and he was born in Lebanon, New Hampshire. His parents, Allan Campbell MacKenzie and Dorothy MacDonald, were Gaelic and English-speaking immigrants from the former small Scottish village of Marsboro, Quebec, Canada and all his grandparents came from the isles of Lewis and Harris in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland.

Bruce, his older brother Charles and his two younger sisters, Mary and Dorothy grew up in the town of Lebanon during the depths of the "Great Depression." He often spoke warmly of a very happy childhood as a member of a large extended Scottish family and although relatively poor by today's standards, he never realized it because during the depression nearly everyone else was struggling to get by as well. Bruce fell in love with, and later married, his high school sweetheart, Lorraine (Lorrie) Lutz, whom he had known since both were small children.

Bruce served in the U.S. Army's 2nd Armored "Hell on Wheels" Division during the Korean War. He later received a B.A. from the University of New Hampshire, an M.A. from Dartmouth College and a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. All three degrees were in Economic Geology. He spent his career working as a mining and mineral exploration geologist, mostly in the Western U.S. but also short projects in Canada, Mexico, Alaska, South America, South Africa and Indonesia. He loved his work and was the author or co-author of several highly regarded scientific papers on the geology and hydrothermal alteration of porphyry molybdenite deposits. He was considered to be an authority on that class of mineral deposits.

Bruce is survived by Lorrie, his wife of 63 years, their four children and their spouses: daughter Karen and husband Eric Johnson; daughter Judith and her husband Harry Walker; son Ken and his wife Lisa (Smoke) MacKenzie and daughter Ann and her husband Tony Satterthwaite.

He was also the loving grandfather of twelve wonderful grandchildren: Laura, Kirsten, Kent and Mackenzie Johnson; Hal Walker and Meredith (Walker) Harris; Paige (MacKenzie) Bradford and Brent MacKenzie; and Christopher, Timothy, Sean and Katie Satterthwaite.

Bruce is also survived by his sister Dorothy Gallien, as well as a number of nieces, nephews and their children.

Bruce lived a long, happy and productive life and loved his family, his work, his friends, his church and playing golf during his retirement years.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 30th at 10am at St. Andrew United Methodist Church: 9203 S University Blvd, Highlands Ranch, Colorado
