Virginia Read

December 15, 1934 — March 7, 2023

Hermitage, TN

Virginia Means Read was born on December 15, 1934, and went to be with the Lord on March 7, 2023. After a battle with colon cancer, Virginia passed away peacefully at her home in Hermitage, TN surrounded by members of her caring family and treasured photos. She is preceded in death by her loving parents Ralph and Mary Means, her younger brother Charles, and her lifelong companion Cornell Read, Sr. We are certain she is being greeted with open arms upon entry into her Heavenly home. She leaves behind her sister, Betty Means, and dear sister-in-law, Sherrille (Charles) Means.
To summarize a life well lived, she was born in Saltillo, MS where she began her education. Upon graduating high school, she spent one year in Japan with her parents where she developed a love for Japanese culture. She subsequently completed her studies at The W (Mississippi State College for Women) in Columbus, MS where she met and fell in love with Cornell Read, Sr. whom she met through mutual friends, while attending Summer School at Mississippi State University. Together they raised a beautiful family with three beloved children, Mary (Greg) Karn, Katherine (David) Addison, and Cornell “Eddie” Read Jr. Along with her children, she was blessed with seven granddaughters, Jennifer (Nick), Virginia, Kerry (Bo), Katlyn (Kevin), Chelsa (Alex), Christina, and Baylie. Finally, she has been blessed with six great-grandchildren, Landon, Claire, Rhett, Riley, Blakely, and Rowan. In addition to her time spent raising her family, she also nurtured the minds of elementary school children during her education career which provided her copious skills for teaching her granddaughters and great grandchildren.
After her career in education, she worked at Maremont where she cultivated a multitude of friendships. In retirement she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. A friend to all, she never met a stranger and always exceeded expectations with her giving nature in helping neighbors and friends with various tasks. Virginia truly has a servant’s heart with an infectious smile whose ability to help someone in need is her legacy. Virginia will be missed by so many.
