Victoria Elizabeth Johnson (Vickie) was born to Claude and Rosa Moore in Los Angeles California on April 16th, 1947. She grew up and was educated in Shreveport, Louisiana. She was baptized in early childhood at Little Union Baptist Church in Shreveport. She graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in Shreveport in 1964, and from Grambling College in 1969, where she was also a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority and majored in Education.
Vickie met James Caldwell and married in Shreveport. His military service gave Vickie the opportunity to travel to Europe (first to Germany) before coming back to the United States and settling in Denver, CO. From this union, Stephanie and Phillip were born before Vickie and James divorced in 1982. Vickie met George T. Johnson (Tyrone) at a neighbor’s BBQ and after many years of courtship that included quite a few Sunday dinners, Tyrone and Vickie were married in 1998.
Memorial service will be held next Saturday on July 16th at 11am at St. Stephen Missionary Baptist Church at 2050 Uinta St in Denver CO 80238 if you’re able to attend.
Vickie worked for the U.S. Government for 34 years for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity) investigating housing needs and concerns. She also worked in the Office of Indian Programs, attending to housing for Native Americans on the reservations throughout several western states.
She traveled a lot with her job investigating fair housing complaints across the western region which included Montana, Utah, South Dakota, North Dakota, Wyoming, and Colorado. Throughout her career at HUD, Vickie worked her way up to leadership positions where she was a supervisor and Fair Housing Director of the Jackson, Mississippi branch before returning to Colorado prior to her retirement in July 2004.
After her retirement from HUD, Vickie worked at Sunrise Retirement Village in Cherry Creek for some time before taking on a role as a substitute teacher in both the Denver and Aurora Public Schools districts. There, she tried to concentrate on ECE-Early Childhood Education through sixth grade. She really wanted to make a difference and loved her students. She especially loved babies and children and had a fondness for dogs [for sure the smaller varieties].
Vickie worked hard to keep a loving and spotless house. Every day of the week the house was tidied up. But Saturday was THE DAY. Laundry, dusting, and vacuuming had to be done on Saturday. IF these chores were done any other day, it would have to be because there was something that physically kept her from doing it that day.
Vickie was a great cook too! She had her favorites but also learned how to cook the favorites of loved ones and guests; another way to show how she cared for others. She also loved to plan dinners, events, and going out of the way to celebrate others and make them feel special. Besides planning those events, another of Vickie’s special gifts included writing poems for others. She had a special talent for putting special memories into words that not many people may know or be aware of. Vickie could also crochet afghans, and celebrating all holidays. Vickie and Phillip took great pride and joy in extensive house decorations during the holiday season.
In addition to work, Vickie was also quite the traveler whether it was by air or seeing the good earth on the road. Numerous trips to reunions with Tyrone and his family to Alabama, Georgia, California, Massachusetts, New York to name but a few states. She also found time along with Tyrone, Stephanie, and Phillip to take several Caribbean cruises together. She even convinced her sister Beverly to come along on one of them. Her last trip was a road trip to Kansas City with Tyrone and Phillip to visit Stephanie.
But no matter how always busy Vickie was, Vickie found time to enjoy so many other things in life. She loved game shows (mainly the Price is Right, Family Feud, Jeopardy, and Wheel of Fortune); Judge Judy (and a few of the other judge shows); Christmas music, tv programs, and movies were enjoyed at all times of the year; fitness clubs for exercise, swimming and water aerobics; quilting; Motown and country music; and attending plays. Not too long ago, Vickie, Tyrone, and Phillip attended a Diana Ross tribute in Denver. And she found time a few years ago to see Hamilton in Kansas City with Stephanie. Vickie could also cut a rug on the dance floor, especially when she could find a suitable partner (who wasn’t named Tyrone). And even with all that enjoyment, Vickie could also lounge with the best of them...and be sure to not disturb.
In mid-June 2022, Vickie was suddenly taken ill by liver failure which caused multiple organs to fail. Vickie passed away unexpectedly on Monday, July 4th at Swedish Medical Center where she was surrounded by her devoted and caring family: Spouse-Tyrone, son-Phillip, daughter-Stephanie, and sister-Beverly Robinson. She leaves behind to cherish her memory: Husband-Tyrone (Parker, CO); mother-Rosa Moore (Los Angeles, CA); daughter-Stephanie K. Caldwell (Kansas City, MO); son-Phillip J. Caldwell (Denver, CO); stepson Keith A. Johnson (Pam) (Parker, CO); sisters Claudia Moore, Brenda Moore, Beverly Robinson, brother Claude Moore Jr. (C.A.) all of Los Angeles, CA; and brother-in-law Kenneth Johnson (Monroeville, AL); as well as several nieces and nephews.
