Tricia Mcvey

Tricia McVey, 57, passed away on October 29, 2020, from non-Covid complications of diabetes.
She was born in Alexandria, VA, and grew up in Pittsburgh, PA. She attended the Sunset School of Preaching in Lubbock,
TX, studying in their Deaf Missions program. At Lipscomb University she earned a B.A. degree in German and Hebrew,
graduating summa cum laude and also pursued an M.A. at Vanderbilt. Fluent in German and Hebrew, she was a
consummate linguist, gifted as a ‘signer' of ASL (American Sign Language), and a scholar of Norwegian, Russian and
Scottish Gaelic languages as well as Erse (Irish Gaelic).
Serving as Lipscomb's foreign language lab director for a few years, she also taught German there. Over the years her
ASL signing skills served several Deaf students attending the University. She helped launch Lipscomb's first and very
successful overseas program in Vienna, Austria. She leaves behind a large number of unpublished true poetry (with pure
rhyme and musical rhythm), and had begun to write mystery stories set in Scotland.
She worked in dog rescue, founding the Tennessee Westie Rescue Network. She was a creative fiber artist in knitting
and quilt making. Her flock of 2 dozen Shetland sheep provide the wool she would spin into yarn for projects such as
winter jackets for rescue dogs. She enjoyed her small farm with chickens, ducks, guineas, peacocks, emus and appreciated
the flock protection provided by a Border Collie and a pair of Great Pyrenees guard dogs. There is also a long list of wellloved,
often slightly ‘used', rescued dogs and cats.
A gifted musician, she played Native American flute, performing at local Powwows and created Nashville's "Heartsong
Flute Circle". Her love of Scottish Gaelic language extended to Scottish and other Celtic folk music which she played on
the Celtic harp and the bowed psaltry. By birth a descendant of Scottish Clan Buchanan (‘sept' Clan Richardson), she was
also a lifetime member of Clan Maclean of Duart of which her husband's Clan Macbheath (pronounced ‘mahk-vay' in
Gaelic) was a sept ("sub-clan"). A lifetime member as well of the Scottish Society of Middle Tennessee, she was a firm
supporter for an independent Scotland.
She is survived by her husband, Dr. Charles H. McVey, Jr. of Lebanon, TN, stepdaughter Jennifer McVey-Roney of
Arrington, TN, stepson Dr. Jeffrey McVey of McMinnville, TN, four step-grandchildren, sister Kathy Gose-Major of Tucson, AZ,
father and brother George Ben Gose Sr. and Jr. of Cincinnati, her mother having passed away in 1987.
I will always miss her tender heart and joyful creativity, her love of our animals and "farmette", her music, and writing,
and exquisite penmanship. Most of all I just miss her.
