Suzanne Hewitt Lowell was born in Schenectady, New York, July 9, 1934 and died January 18, 2016 at home in Denver, Colorado after a difficult three-month battle with cancer. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She had an unparalleled zest for life and loyalty to her family and friends.
Suzanne graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Wellesley College in 1956 and remained very proud and supportive of her alma mater throughout her life. She taught school for one year at the Brookline School near Boston. In 1957, she married James D. Lowell at her parents' home in Huntington, Long Island, and in 1958 the two moved to Libya, North Africa, where Jim began a long geologic career that Suzanne supported faithfully and enthusiastically throughout. Their eldest daughter, Jennifer Audrey, was born in Libya. Their second daughter, Carey Evelyn, was born during a home-leave stay in Huntington. They then lived in The Netherlands, where their third daughter, Elizabeth Suzanne, was born, and in Lexington, Virginia, and Houston, Texas, where their fourth daughter, Alexandra Hewitt, was born, and finally settled in 1973 in Denver.
Suzanne was a woman of many interests and passions. In addition to teaching, she began a long career as a travel agent after her move to Denver. Her travel with Jim and with her friends, which Suzanne enjoyed immensely, took them to more than 100 countries. She also greatly enjoyed traveling with her children all over the world. She loved the beach, mountains, skiing, hiking and camping with family and friends. She had an enduring love of music, and regularly attended the symphony and opera. She was a great cook, and was always testing and trading new recipes. Perhaps her greatest passion was her seven grandchildren. Suzanne was devoted to her grandchildren and spent much of her spare time with them, always ready with a hug, help or a treat.
Suzanne is survived by her husband, four daughters and seven grandchildren: John Marin, Hannah Dunne, Olivia Marin, Eva Horna Lowell, Homer Gere, Harrison Tupa and Avery Tupa, sons-in-law Juan Marin and Keith Tupa, and sisters Madge Staples and Corliss Hewitt and their daughters. She was preceded in death by her parents William Latham Hewitt and Audrey Norma (Sullivan) Hewitt.
