Steven Keith Dowlen, 60, of Arvada, Colorado, died May 27, 2018. Steve was a friend
to everyone he met. He was generous and kind and always ready to help whenever
asked. Steve was always coming up with something understatedly funny to say and
always viewed life as an optimist.
He loved all kinds of outdoor activities: camping, snow
and water skiing, swimming, hunting, fishing, tennis, boating, hiking, dirt bike riding and
much more. His family and friends will remember him making short films on the home
movie camera, driving across states to provide a ride home from college or visit family,
finally getting his pilot's license (a dream since high school), skiing the black slopes,
water skiing in the Houston Ship Channel, playing on the college tennis team, making a
spectacular catch in city-league softball, singing Blues Brothers songs with friends,
teasing all the girls, grilling on the porch and always having fun wherever he was.
Born in Minneapolis, Minn. and raised in Baytown Texas, Steve attended Ross S.
Sterling High School in Baytown and went on to Texas A&M and Southwest Texas State
University. Although he started his career in retail, Steve quickly moved into the homebuilding
industry and established himself as a much sought-after purchasing and
finance executive. He liked a simple life, driving a truck and living modestly himself, but
providing generously for others and always willing to laugh at a joke.
Steve was loved much and will be greatly missed by his mother, Elsie Brucker and
stepfather, Denny Brucker of Texas; sister, Linda Dowlen and brother-in-law Gary
Kleiner of Colorado; brother, Ken Dowlen and family, Priscilla, Joshua, Shane, Brandon
and Taylor of Texas; and cousins Mary Anne Eaton, Danny Eaton and the Eaton family
of Texas; Sheryl and Gary Pickens and family of Texas; Joseph Dowlen, Kate
Weatherford and family of Texas; and many other relatives and friends. He was
preceded in death by his father, Joseph Amos Dowlen; grandparents, Amos and Leah
Dowlen and Warren and Elsie Lassiter; uncle and aunt, Bill and Dorcus Dowlen and
cousin, Bill Dowlen.
A private family service was held May 30, 2018, and a memorial is planned later in the
year. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Mayo Clinic at this site: https://
philanthropy.mayoclinic.org/donateMC. Please specify the designation specifically to
brain cancer research in memory of Steve K. Dowlen.
