On February 18th the Lucero family lost their devoted, loyal, and loving husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather, great grandfather, great-great grandfather .... and New Mexico lost one of its heroes. Corporal Santiago James Lucero passed quietly at the age of 99, surrounded by friends and loved ones. As one of the “Battling Bastards of Bataan” and a survivor of the Bataan Death March, his example gave hope during some of the darkest days of the Second World War. For the next eight decades, he served as an example of the true meaning of Service and Sacrifice. While his passing deeply saddens us all, he is at peace, reunited with his comrades in the 200th & 515th Coast Artillery Regiments, as well as all those whose lives he touched along the way.
