Sandy Posey Cummins went to be with her Savior Saturday morning, July 20th at her home in Lebanon, Tennessee. Sandy was born on June 18th, 1944 in Jasper, Alabama to Carlos and Era Posey. From early on, Sandy possessed an incredible talent and passion for music, performing for the first time at her grandfather’s funeral when she was just five years old. Sandy eventually moved to Memphis, Tennessee where she began working at American Sound Studio as an office clerk. It is here that her captivating voice and talent was discovered. Sandy contributed backing vocals on numerous records, most notably on Elvis Presley’s “Kentucky Rain”, “In the Ghetto”, “Suspicious Minds” and Percy Sledge’s “When a Man Loves a Woman”. Beginning her solo career, Sandy obtained her first Hot 100 hit in 1966 with her single “Born a Woman”, peaking at 12 on the charts and earning her two Grammy nominations. Other hits include Single Girl (which peaked at number 12 on the hot 100 in 1967) and I Take It Back (another number 12 hit). In her later years, Sandy spent her time touring the world with her husband, Elvis Wade. Although Sandy’s devotion and appreciation for music outlined many aspects of her life, her most important commitment was to her faith and sharing the Gospel. Sandy’s love of Christ influenced not only her music, but everyone in her company, defining how she wished to be remembered. Sandy is survived by her husband, Wade Cummins and his children, her daughter Amy Schween, her two grandsons John Dalton Schween and River Schween, and her sister and best friend, Marilyn Shelton. We anticipate the joyful reunion with her in heaven.
