Ruth Fuller

April 26, 1937 — March 3, 2014

Dr. Ruth L. Fuller passed away peacefully after a long illness on March 3rd, 2014.

Ruth was born on April 26th, 1937 in Newberry, South Carolina to Anne Fuller Morgan and Samuel Fuller. She was an only child. In 1939 the family relocated to New York City. Ruth lived with her mother in public housing as her father was often trying to find work in various parts of the country. Although times were difficult and money was very tight, Ruth thrived as a happy, cheerful and curious child. She loved to sing and draw and absorbed anything new.

When Ruth entered Kindergarten her teachers noticed that she was extremely bright. Ruth was learning at a 6th grade level by the 3rd grade. This would be one of several times that Ruth skipping a grade was suggested by her school. Ultimately, Ruth graduated from high school at age 15 and went on to Howard University on a full academic scholarship where she graduated with Honors with B.S. in Chemistry and Physics.

Ruth originally desired to pursue a Nursing career but because of her very high I.Q., she was persuaded to apply for Medical School by a college counselor. Unfortunately, the only way she could afford to attend Medical School was if she received another scholarship. Ruth took the MCAT and scored high enough to be offered scholarships to several different Medical Schools. Ruth graduated with Honors from State University of New York S.U.N.Y Downstate Medical Center. Her focus was Child Psychiatry. Ruth work for several clinics, non- profit organizations and eventually went in to private practice in Harlem, New York.

Ruth married Courtney Callender and had 2 children, Hillary and Michael. The family lived in Harlem until 1978 when Ruth was recruited to Denver by University Hospital. Courtney did not follow and they ultimately divorced. Ruth practiced Child Psychiatry as well as taught as an Associate Professor. She sat on countless Boards and Committees, had published research and books, won numerous awards, and genuinely loved what she did. Ruth had the opportunity to travel all over the U.S., Europe and the Caribbean on several occasions with her children Hillary and Michael. Ruth believed that travel was Education. She retired earlier than anticipated due to illness in 2002. Ruth is still very well respected by her peers and friends. Ruth took great joy in knowing that she set an example and encouraged countless women and minorities to attend Medical School.

Ruth touched many lives through many generations. She was loved by countless people and will be missed and not forgotten. She is survived by her children and many cousins all over the country.

Reception immediately following the service at the Montview Boulevard Church.
