Dr. Robert R. Strunk, 92, passed away on January 21, 2025, in Aurora, Colorado. Born on October 4, 1932, in Cumberland, Wisconsin, to Russell and Laura Strunk, Bob was raised in Spooner, Wisconsin, where he developed a deep love for the outdoors and the sense of community that would stay with him throughout his life.
Bob attended the University of Minnesota in Duluth, where he pursued his undergraduate studies, before going on to earn his degree in dentistry. Known as "Dr. Strunk" to many, he began his career with private practice in Forest Lake, Minnesota, where his gentle nature and attention to detail made him a respected and beloved member of the community.
Bob's path took a new turn when he joined the United States Air Force, where he would go on to serve for 30 years. During his distinguished military career, he served overseas, including time in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War, earning the rank of Full Colonel long before his retirement in 1987. Bob’s service to his country was a source of great pride, and his leadership and dedication left a lasting impact on those he worked with.
On May 30, 1963, Bob married Inger M. Bäckman (maiden name), and together they built a life centered around love, family, and service. Bob is survived by his three sons (Erik, Leif and Lars) and three grandchildren (Brody, Spencer and Tanner), each of whom he cherished deeply. His love for his family was immeasurable, and he often spoke with pride about their accomplishments and the joy they brought to his life.
Bob was also a proud Master Mason, having been initiated into the Masons in 1957. Outside of his professional and military life, he loved fishing and the outdoors, collecting artwork and antiques with his wife, was a voracious reader, and loved to engage anyone in thoughtful conversation. Those who knew him will forever remember his infectious laugh, his warmth, the loving relationships he built throughout his lifetime and, perhaps most of all, his radiant smile—a smile that could light up any room.
A small family service will be held in Bob’s honor on February 14, 2025, 3 p.m., at the Fort Logan National Cemetery (Shelter C), where he will also be interred with his wife who passed in 2016. For those unable to attend, a virtual celebration of his life in photos is located at www.creamatesimply.com/obituaries/robert-strunk. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Spooner First United Methodist Church, www.spoonerumc.org.
