Bob was born in Boston, the 5th of 7 children to James Edward Jr and Ellen Downes. He was raised in Weston, MA attending Weston schools and graduating from Weston High School. Bob played football and was captain of the varsity hockey team two seasons. His high school yearbook described him as "Fantastic on the ice! Smallest powerpack on the football team. Philosophy: Live for today. Sociable with everyone!"
He continued his education at the University of Denver majoring in business. His junior year he attended The American College in Leysin, Switzerland where he enjoyed his courses and traveled extensively throughout Europe. After college Bob passed his CPA and began working for the Regional Transportation District. He later received his MBA degree from Regis University in Denver. As a life-long learner Bob received numerous certificates in finance and accounting.
Bob retired from RTD after 38 years as a dedicated and valued employee with his final years working in the Grant Department. His knowledge and skills brought in several billion dollars to help finance the Light Rail projects and the Train to the Plane.
He learned to ski in grade school in New England and was an avid and accomplished skier his entire life. He also enjoyed playing golf with several groups. Each August, he returned to Chatham, Cape Cod to enjoy family gatherings with daily swims and boating.
Bob enjoyed music throughout his life and played the saxophone and guitar in his free time. He loved to dance!
He was a member of several Catholic groups, the Catholic Alumni Club and the Cabrini group. The Church was always important to him. He had a deep faith that contributed to his lifelong amazing optimism and spiritualism.
A Bronco season ticket holder for many years he remained a loyal fan, Bob hosted fun Bronco and Superbowl parties that his friends all remember. He did support the Boston sports teams especially the Red Sox but always cheered for the Colorado Rockies each season.
Bob is dearly missed by his six siblings and their families along with numerous treasured friends, and his cherished goddaughter Viviana. He is lovingly remembered as an honest, gentle and loyal friend with a kind smile. He always maintained a positive outlook and enjoyed a zest for living with a great sense of humor.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Bob may be made to the American Cancer Society.
