Norman Chiles

Norm Chiles passed away on Tuesday, December 24th, 2013, in Lone Tree, CO. Norm was born on January 23, 1936, in Elk City KS. He grew up in Cheraw, CO., graduating from Cheraw H. S. in 1954. In February, 1955, Norm enlisted in the United States Army. He completed basic training at Fort Carson, CO. He then went to the Army Security Agency School in Fort Blevins, MA. He was stationed at Helemano Army Base on the island of Oahu in Hawaii where he monitored radio signals and Sputnik as it flew across Hawaii every 91 minutes. After being discharged in January of 1958, he returned to Cheraw and enrolled at Otero Jr. College in La Junta, CO. On February 23rd, 1958, Norm married Bobbie Bond of Crowley, CO. In 1964, Norm started his career in highway and heavy construction working for Peter Kiewit Sons on the 48th Avenue overpass now known as I-70. He later worked for Wycon Construction CO., Siegrist Construction CO. and Hamon Contractors where he was employed when he was diagnosed with lung cancer in July of 2013. Norm especially enjoyed his work and was an enthusiastic participant in activities at the Colorado Contractors Assoc. Norm's hobbies included golf and photography. He was an avid fan of the Chicago Bears and the New York Yankees. He enjoyed reading and traveling. He never saw a museum or an art gallery that he did not want to enter. He is survived by his wife and his daughter Rochelle Chiles of the family home. Other survivors include daughter Susan Pedersen, daughter Melinda Dark Christopher, grandsons, Travis Chiles Megan, Joshua Pedersen and his Fiancée Shannon Cooper, Matthew Dark Tracy and granddaughter Katie Heinle John. He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant grandson Christopher Lee Dark. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude's Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas PL., Memphis, TN. 38105-3678 or to a charity of your choice. Services will be at 1 P. M. on Friday, January 17th, 2013, at Fort Logan National Cemetery, Denver, Staging area A. A celebration of Norm's life will follow at 2:15 P. M. at Jose's Restaurant, 2420 W. Main St., Littleton 80120.
