Nina Lee Mackey Obituary
Nina Lee Mackey, 94, had recently moved to Albuquerque from San Antonio, Texas. Lee died Saturday, August 3, 2019 at a local residential assisted living home after a long illness.
Lee was born in 1925 in Norton, Texas. In 1947 she graduated with a nursing degree from Texas State College for Women in Denton, Texas. Prior to her graduation, during World War II, Lee served in the Army Corps of Nursing.
Lee moved to San Antonio, Texas, where she stayed for more than 50 years. Initially she worked as a registered nurse at the Baptist Medical Center Hospital. After completing the requisite coursework she served as a medical lab technician and a teaching assistant until her retirement.
During her retirement, Lee enjoyed close friendships with family and friends. Some of her hobbies throughout her lifetime included playing the guitar, gardening, bird-watching, reading, and fishing. She also enjoyed watching San Antonio Spurs basketball, attending plays, musicals and other local events in the Hill County, and experiencing the world's best barbecue. Throughout her life her best friend was her brother Bill. Lee lived life simply, with integrity and a love of laughter.
Lee is survived by her niece, Cindi Mackey Wallace (husband Mark), nephew James Keith Mackey (wife Donna), niece Melissa Mackey (husband Matt), Carol Mackey (sister-in-law), three great-nephews Jason & Jeff Cox, and Joshua Mackey, 1 great grandniece, Evanie Cox, and 1 great grandnephew, Kayson Cox, and numerous cousins.
Memorial gifts may be made to any of the following organizations: Alzheimer's Association, the American Cancer Society, St. Jude's Hospital, and the American Heart Association.
A simple memorial service for scattering her ashes at the cemetery in Norton, Texas, will take place at a later date.
