Maybelle had a life-long passion for music. She attended Ohio State University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Music Education in 1946. She could play and instruct every instrument. She won a seat in the Columbus Philharmonic Orchestra, 2nd chair clarinet, 1942-1945. She was a forerunner of women in male dominated music, playing in the Orchestra and leading marching bands while teaching school.
Maybelle was a member of Delta Omicron Musical Honorary, Kappa Delta sorority, and Order of the Eastern Star.
Maybelle taught music K-12 and later transitioned to teaching English. She would sometimes return letters to Becky and Alan, corrected for grammar in red pen!
Maybelle and Dick moved many times due to Dick’s accounting career, Rhode Island, Delaware, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Illinois, spending their later years in Florida. Maybelle was always active in her community, serving with Girl Scouts, church, musical (directing, and singing) choirs and playing piano. At the age of 95, she was on the daily calendar, “Melodies by Maybelle”, playing hymns before breakfast in her assisted living facility.
Her signature sign-off for notes and letters was always a music note, most often the slanted beamed sixteenth note.
