Maurice W. Tuning III, affectionately known as Pete, passed away on November 2, 2022, at the age of 59.
None of us can truly sum up the life of another, but this is our greatest attempt.
Pete was born October 16, 1963 to Delores and Maurice (Pete) Tuning. He grew up in Fredonia, NY, surrounded by grape vineyards and Lake Erie. He graduated from Fredonia High School in 1982, obtained his Associate’s degree in theater from Jamestown Community College, and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in English from SUNY Fredonia. He loved the stage, and in his younger years participated in many performances through school and Community Theater. He also loved reading, everything from his remarkable comic book collection to classic literature and poetry. He was known to spend many afternoons composing poetry, which reflected his deep feelings and observations of the world.
Pete’s professional life included work in the hospitality field. He worked many restaurants in western NY and Denver; as server and kitchen manager.
Pete moved to Colorado in 1993, where he met his former wife, Tracy Meyer, and with her, raised two sons, Max and Ian. Max and Ian were the greatest joys of his life. He delighted in every moment with them, and embraced their activities of music and athletics. They were truly the great love of his life. Pete also loved Star Trek, super heroes, old movies, Natalie Merchant, chicken wings, and the Buffalo Bills.
Pete was often asked, “Why do you go by Pete?” Truthfully, he didn’t know. But he was the proud third generation of Tuning men to be named Maurice, and go through life as Pete.
Our beloved Pete could fill a room; with his big smile, big laugh, big voice, and big heart. He could also be prone to big anger, but such moments passed quickly. He more often left us all laughing. He could find the humor in almost any situation. This brought him many friends, as his life illustrated that laughter is truly the shortest distance between people.
Pete is survived by his two sons; Max, a junior at CU Boulder studying music education, and Ian, a senior at West Arvada High school, both of Colorado. He is also survived by his siblings; Mary and her husband, Bill Stockmeyer, of Portland, ME; Bob, of South Portland, ME; Pat and her husband, Doug Greenberg, of Colorado Springs, CO; and Maureen, of Sylva, NC, along with many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents and three nieces.
A memorial to honor Pete and our love for him will be held Saturday, November 19, 1:00 pm mountain standard time, at the home of Pat and Doug in Colorado Springs. All are welcome to attend, and this address can be obtained from any of Pete’s siblings. Or please join us over zoom at Remembering Pete Meeting ID: 843 1615 9056
In honor of Pete, eat a hot chicken wing, enjoy the wisdom of Mr. Spock, and put down your glass.
