Mary Margaret Schmidt of Castle Rock, CO passed away on April 14, 2025, after a short but courageous battle with cancer. She was born on March 26, 1943, in Saginaw, MI to Blanche (Terrian) Simon.
Mary faced her illness with positivity and strength, choosing to forgo cancer treatments and die with dignity and grace. She was blessed with a peaceful passing, surrounded by love and family. Her husband of 62 years, Walter (Wally) Schmidt, was by her side until her last breath—a testament to the enduring love and devotion they had for each other.
Mary is survived by her loving husband, Wally Schmidt, and their three sons: John, Steve, and Rick (Susan) Schmidt. She was a proud grandmother to Justin, Tyler, and Bailey Schmidt, and a beloved great-grandmother to Carter James Schmidt. Mary is also survived by a brother-in-law, two sisters-in-law, nieces, and nephews.
Mary joins her great-granddaughter, Holly Alaina Schmidt, who passed in 2016. She is also preceded in death by her mother, Blanche Simon, her brother, James Simon, Father and Mother-in-law, John and Helen Schmidt, and brother-in-law, Jack Schmidt.
Mary’s passion was always cooking, and even more so, sharing her creations. Nothing brought her more joy than watching those she loved enjoy what she made. Her kitchen was always filled with warmth, laughter, and something delicious on the stove. When she wasn’t in the kitchen, Mary and Wally loved taking jeep rides together, hunting for treasures at garage sales, and keeping up a decades-long card game rivalry. Over the course of more than 16,000 games, Mary held a proud 16-game lead—proof that she was just as competitive as she was kind-hearted. In addition to the cherished friendships they built throughout their lives in Michigan and more recently in their Auburn Ridge community, the years they spent as snowbirds in Needles, California stand out as a treasured highlight in the later chapter of their lives.
A celebration of life service is currently being planned and will be held at a time to be determined in the coming weeks. Details will be shared with family and friends once arrangements are finalized.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to support cancer research, a cause close to Mary’s heart and one that she and Wally both deeply believed in.
Mary will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever in our hearts.
