Pat Breed was born in 1923 in Harrison, Nebraska and grew up in Crawford, Nebraska, the daughter of Floy Alderman Dallam born 1898 andHoward Chester Dallam born approx. 1883. She had a younger brother, Robert Dallam born 1925 and a younger sister, Iona Dallam Bloch born 1928. She wrote that "We truly had a magic childhood. We had a neighborhood of about 3 blocks—in summer days we played cowboys and softball, went swimming, had backyard picnics…and played Tarzan." She developed a love of reading when she was very young and this passion continued through her life.
Following graduation from Crawford High School she lived in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Denver and worked as a legal secretary. She had fond memories of the Trocadero Ballroom at Elitch's and of ice skating on the lake at Evergreen. When World War II ended she decided to pursue her education and attended Park College, Parkville, Missouri, where she metLaurence Larry Breed, whom she married on June 13, 1948 at the Corona Presbyterian Church, Denver. She left college and moved with her new husband to Lawrence, Kansas, where he attended graduate school at the University of Kansas. They then moved to the Kansas City area, where she had two sons and lived in Overland Park, Kansas, for over fifty years.
She decided to return to college once her children were in school and she received a B. A. from St. Teresa's College now called Avila University, Kansas City, an M.A. in English from the University of Missouri, Kansas City, and an M. Phil. in English from the University of Kansas, Lawrence. She taught English at the University of Missouri, Kansas City and for many years at Longview Community College in Lee's Summit, Missouri. She lived the last seven years of her life at a retirement center in Englewood, Colorado.
She was a loving and devoted wife and mother who conveyed her love of books, the arts, and her compassion for humanity to everyone around her. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her brother and sister. Survivors include her sons and their wives, Michael Breed and Cheryl Ristig Denver, and Paul Breed and Annette Fabiano Portland, Oregon, and grandchildren Molly Breed Portland, Ann Breed Denver, and Elise Breed Atlanta. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Southminster Presbyterian Church Prairie Village, Kansas, The Nature Conservancy, UNICEF, or the National Wildlife Federation. A memorial open house will be held at the Skyroom, Englewood Meridian, 3455 S. Corona, Englewood, Colorado from 3:00 to 5:00 pm Saturday August 4th. A memorial service will be held atSouthminster Presbyterian Church, Prairie Village Kansas, date to be determined.
