A wonderful life ended when LeRoy Wilbur Zimmerman died quietly at home at the age of 86 on November 30, 2015 in Northglenn Colorado.
LeRoy was born December 25, 1928, in Leetonia Ohio, to Warren and Grace Zimmerman, who, along with his brother Wayne Zimmerman and sister, Betty Boston have preceded him in death.
LeRoy met and married his lifelong love Rita Fahsl while he was stationed in Europe after World War 2.
For 52 years they lived and raised their family in Germany, Massachusetts, Texas, Florida and back to Europe again as LeRoy pursued his military career. LeRoy retired from the Air Force in 1973 and they established their home in San Antonio where they lived until relocating to Colorado in 1980.
LeRoy served in the Air Force for nearly 27 years as a communications and technical controller professional. Upon his retirement in 1973, he began working as a quality assurance manager for Touduz furniture in San Antonio. After several years with this company, he left to manage a series of convenience stores for both Jiff-e Mart and Seven Eleven; he eventually rose to the position of District Manager and was recognized multiple times as both Outstanding Store Manager and Top District Manager. In his later years, LeRoy was a Security Specialist with Lockheed Martin Corporation from where he eventually retired.
LeRoy was a longtime member of the Retired Enlisted Association, American Legion, Air Force Sergeants Association, and the AACS Alumni Association. He enjoyed keeping in touch with his friends established over his long service.
LeRoy was a voracious reader and would always be surrounded by at least a half dozen different works of fiction and nonfiction at any given time. He particularly enjoyed Westerns and historical novels.
LeRoy was an avid fan of the Denver Broncos and enjoyed watching professional wrestling as well. Until later in life, he was an avid swimmer who enjoyed swimming laps for exercise and relaxation. From his time as a basketball player in high school to lifting weights during his recovery from cancer in 2009, he enjoyed being active in between pies and ice cream.
Survivors include: his wife, Rita Walburga Zimmerman, his daughter Caroline Alexia Zimmerman of Northglenn, his son Glenn Zimmerman of Derby KS (Sandra); brother Ralph (Eleanor), sisters Lena Tingle (Jim) and Nora Hussar, all of Ohio; grandchildren: Christopher Zimmerman, Alasyn Zimmerman, Melissa Wills (Brandon), Ryan Voss (Emily); great grandchildren: Brandon Wills, Bryson Wills, and Browen Wills.
