Karl Don Stout passed away June 30, 2014 in Denver, CO after years of declining health. He was the son of Carl and Lorene Stout who made their home and ran the family business, Stout's Turkey Hatchery, in Richland until 1968. Siblings are Ronald Stout of Southern Pines, NC and Betty Poehlman, Durham, NC.
Karl attended the University of Missouri where he studied Agri-Journalism. He was a gifted writer and photographer - talents used throughout his career, particularly in magazine production. He was listed in Who's Who, served as President of Alpha Gamma Rho, and was initiated into the senior honor's society, QEBH, while attending the University of Missouri. Commissioned an Ensign in the USNR where he served actively for 4 years as Naval Aviator and 8 years as a reservist, he earned the rank of LCDR.
He returned to Richland in 1960 where he joined the family business. He was married to the former Martha Ann Simpson and together they had Karl D. Stout Jr, Columbia, MO, Karen Stout (Don Catlett), and Daniel Stout, Little Rock, AR. Karen preceded Karl in death but blessed him with two granddaughters, Brenna and Delaney, of Columbia.
Karl, living in St. Joseph, MO, Scottsdale, AZ, and Denver, CO, was known for his genius in marketing and advertising. Head of successful agencies and editor of award-winning magazines, he was well known for his promotion of Colorado destinations. He married Cathy Anne Smaha in Denver and they had Megan Stecker (Christian) and Sarah Hansen (Kyle) all of Denver. Sarah blessed Karl with grandson, Evan, in 2013.
Karl, who graduated Richland HS, Richland, Missouri in 1952, retired to a small farm near the Gasconade in 2004 and enjoyed being reacquainted with high school friends, former business associates and the RHS Alumni group until his declining health suggested his return to Denver. He made his home at Serenity House where he was attended by its staff and lovingly visited by his family.
Burial is Friday, July 18th, 1:30pm at Fort Logan Military Cemetery where he will receive military honors.
Memorial contributions may be sent to University of Missouri Traditions Fund, c/o Don Catlett, 812 Forest Hill Court, Columbia, MO 65203, where pavers bearing Karl's name and citing his career will be dedicated in October at Traditions Plaza and proceeds will benefit his beloved University.
