Joyce Brewer

March 6, 1949 — April 13, 2017

Joyce Brewer, 68, passed away peacefully on April 13, 2017 at home in Highlands Ranch, CO with her husband, Todd, holding her after a long-fought battle with MS and then brain cancer.

Joyce was born to Rolland & Wanda Simpson on March 6, 1949 in Cherokee, OK. She lived briefly on a farm property near Helena, then in Ringwood near a gas plant, before moving their home to Fairview because of the danger living near the plant. Joyce means "Joyous, Cheerful, Merry" and anyone that met her, knew her that all of those things were definitely true of her. We thought of her as our "Joyful Light". Joyce was so full of Life and fun loving.

She attended Fairview Grade School & Fairview High School where she excelled both academically and in basketball. In her Senior Year in High School, she was voted as the Outstanding Senior Girl and was on the State Basketball Championship team that year as well.

She attended Southwestern State College, receiving an Associate Business, before marrying Todd on 6/1/1968. They moved to Stillwater and she worked an Assistant Manager/Bookkeeper in an office supply company while he finished his degree at OSU. After his graduation in 1970, and a four-month delay for the OK National Guards, they moved to Portland, Oregon.

Joyce loved the beauty of Portland and loved raising her two boys there. She was a tomboy at heart and enjoyed them so much. After the boys were older, she started working as a teacher's assistant for a kindergarten teacher. She was a great assistant, loved all kids, they loved her, and one of the most satisfying times for her was helping the teacher improve the learning & social level for a boy with Muscular Dystrophy by several years in one year.

Joyce is survived by her husband, Todd; son Dave, daughter-in-law Laurel, granddaughter Emilia and grandson, Henry of Ogden, Utah; son Nate, daughter-in-law Britt, grandsons Jake and Cody of Portland, Oregon; brother Darrel Simpson of San Benito, Texas and many nephews & nieces.

Her illnesses dimmed her "Light" somewhat later in her life, but it was always there and she continued to be her sweet self and was always appreciative of the things that people did for her. One of the caregivers with Joyce for several years said of her months ago in a text, "praying for the graceful, kind, beautiful Joyce". She will be remembered for her cute little voice, big heart, gentle spirit, twinkle in her eyes, tremendous sense of humor, and kindness to everyone she met.

Her "Light" is shining even brighter now and singing forever!

The family of Joyce Brewer wishes to thank Agape Hospice for their great care and compassion.
