John Talbert

John David Talbert, pastor, lover of Jesus and native Denverite, was delivered from his diseased body by Jesus on September 25, 2019 at the age of 61.

John is survived by his sister, Marilyn Talbert and mother Mary Louise Talbert. He is predeceased by his Father, Gerald Allan Talbert and grandparents Belle and Leo McNerney and Louise Talbert.

John was born in Denver on June 5, 1958 to Mary Louise and Jerry Talbert. He graduated from Kent Denver school in 1977, Baylor University in Waco, Texas in 1981 with a degree in Business. After college John attended Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas where he received a Masters of Divinity degree in 1983 and a PhD in Preaching in 1989.

Following seminary, John was called in 1989 to pastor First Southern Baptist Church in Northglenn, Colorado. He remained the pastor of this north Denver congregation until 2016. Though the 27 years of pastoring this church, John’s heart was in serving Jesus through evangelism, Preaching the Word faithfully, and investing his life in the lives of his congregation. John’s ministry in this community expanded as he welcomed 3 thriving mission congregations into the FSBC Northglenn family: New Generation Community Church, Korean Comfort Baptist Church, and Iglesia Bautista de Torre Fuerte.

John was diagnosed with Mantle Cell Lymphoma in 2010. After receiving 8 rounds of chemotherapy, John underwent a bone marrow transplant in 2016. The Allogenic transplant was successful and John improved with immune suppressing drugs until June 4, 2017 when he was diagnosed with a Mantle Cell Lymphoma brain tumor in his cerebellum. On his birthday, June 5, John had a 7 hour brain surgery to remove as much of the tumor as possible. 14 rounds of radiation followed to remove the remainder of the tumor. In the years leading to his death in 2019, John embraced life – rebounding once again from infections, complications of graft vs host disease and debilitating drug reactions. He loved the forum of daily blogging to continue to share the word of God to those that chose to read his daily posts. Many were blessed as he encouraged his readers to find comfort and help in Jesus as he had done. John always said that the gift of cancer allowed him to encourage a wider group of people through his blog.

John was the best big brother to his sister Marilyn and caring son to his mother, Mary Louise. John was an avid Broncos fan, golf fanatic and most of all lover of expository preaching which incorporates a careful exegesis of the passage in it’s original context. John is celebrating his freedom from pain and suffering in the presence of Jesus as we remember him in this memorial service at First Southern Baptist Church of Northglenn, on Saturday, October 5, 2019.
