Janice (Jan) Annette Rich, devoted mother, grandmother, sister, and friend passed away on November 9, 2017 in Lakewood, CO after a brief illness. Jan was born in East Liverpool, Ohio to Howard and Sylvia Anderson, but spent most of her youth in Ft. Lauderdale, FL (one of the places she always liked to call "home"). After moving to Washington, D.C., she graduated from the Burdick Vocational High School in 1954, specializing in Secretarial Training. After high school, she worked for the Navy Department Bureau of Avionics and was honored to be a secretary for Major John Glenn before he became an astronaut.
Jan returned "home" to Ft. Lauderdale in 1960 where she landed her dream job at WFTL Radio doing commercial writing, voice over talent and office administration work. During her time at WFTL she met many famous celebrities from both the music and movie industries. Jan often reminisced about her time in Ft. Lauderdale and working for the radio station. She very much enjoyed the beach/ocean, site seeing and travelling around Florida.
In 1964, Jan returned to Washington, D.C. where she went to work for the U.S. Naval Oceanographic Office, Department of the Navy as a Clerk Typist where she received numerous awards and honors from the Navy.
In 1971, Jan came west to Golden, CO and went to work at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Department of Interior. After a few years working in the Division of Law Enforcement, she transferred to the Division of Engineering, where she retired in 2005. Over the years with Fish and Wildlife, she received many awards and honors for her work and dedication. After her retirement, she gladly took on the full time job of grandma and took care of her three grandchildren during the day.
Over her long career, Jan met many wonderful co-workers and some of her best friends whom she always had the highest regard for.
Her hobbies and activities included watching Notre Dame football games (in person when she could) as she was a lifelong fan of Notre Dame football. One of her best memories was visiting the Notre Dame Campus in 2001...at this point she thought she "had done died and gone to heaven". She also enjoyed cooking, camping, listening to music (from her large record collection), reading, watching classic movies and travelling throughout the western states. Jan's biggest accomplishment in life were her kids and grandkids. Amongst a variety of other things, she spent many a day at classic car shows and civil war reenactments with her son, at school programs and dance performances with her daughter, at marching band competitions with her granddaughter, or at a baseball field/softball field with her other two grand children.
Jan is preceded in death by her parents, her twin brothers Clyde and Wayne Cowfer, several aunts, uncles, cousins and many of her dear friends. She is survived by her son, Michael Shaug (Theresa), her daughter Stacy Persichetti (Chris), her grandchildren (and biggest joy) Taryn Lind (Lars), Austin Persichetti, Makenna Persichetti, her brother William Anderson (Patty) of Virginia, and other family and friends.
At her request, there was no formal funeral service. However, she did wish that all of her friends and family would honor/remember her by taking a swig of Southern Comfort while listening to the Notre Dame Fight Song and the bag pipe version of Amazing Grace.
To quote her granddaughter Taryn "my grandma was beautiful inside and out, she had the best sense of humor, and she loved her family almost as much as she loved Jesus. Her faith was incredible."
