Ingeborg Hantschel

March 17, 1916 — November 27, 2013

Born March 17, 1916 in Linz, Austria to Adolf and Margarete Katzwendel. Inge passed away November 27, 2013 at the age of 97, at Littleton Adventist Hospital. Inge immigrated to the US from Germany in 1957 with her husband Herbert and four of their children, and resided in Denver since that time.

Inge's passions were her family, figure skating, pharmacy, flowers especially peonies and pink roses, and sharing her love of math. She also loved the Lipizaner Dancing Horses, and enjoyed horseback riding. She last rode on her 90th Birthday and often expressed her desire to ride again.

As a young woman she enjoyed figure skating on frozen ponds with music provided by her younger brother and a hand cranked gramophone, and often at skating rinks in Colorado.

She received her "Artis Pharmaceuticae Magistrum" Pharmaceutical degree in Austria in 1939, and worked in her father's pharmacy Mariahilf Apoteke in Komotau and then later in a pharmacy in Haida; then in pharmaceutical manufacturing. In addition to speaking German and English, she also spoke Czechoslovakian and Latin, which provided her with the botanical names in her pharmaceutical career. She was very proud of her eight years of language training during her studies in the German University of Prague. Once in Colorado she dedicated herself to her family.

Inge began volunteering with the Denver Public Schools in the late 1960's at Stephen Knight Elementary School. This soon developed into a new found passion in math and her sharing this love of math by creating a Math Lab for elementary school students at Cory Elementary School. Through simple means and props, and gentle guidance she was able to convey the concepts of math in a way that was easily understood by her students. She received commendations from The Denver Public Schools and The City and County of Denver for her creation of, and achievements, in the Math Lab. She continued this into her early 80's.

She also volunteered in the library at Saint Thomas Seminary, now the Archdiocese of Denver repairing books. She was very proud of being able to help restore and repair the books in the library. Inge spent many years as Den Mother for her son's Boy Scouts, and was active in the PTA during her children's school days. She was a member of Eastern Stars, the Deutscher Turnverein, and the Goethe Club of Denver.

Survivors include her sister Irma Jenni; sons Dieter Hantschel Sherry, Rainer Hantschel, and Robert Hantschel; daughter Doris Fuller; grandchildren Jennifer Fuller, Eric Fuller Tara, Morgan Hantschel, Emma Hantschel; great-grand children Tyler Roberts, Hailey Roberts, and Reece Fuller. Preceded in death by her husband Herbert Hantschel, her son Frank Hantschel, and her brother Wilfried Katzwendel Austria.

A memorial service honoring her will be at 2:00 pm on Monday December 9, 2013 at Kirk of Bonnie Brae, 1201 So Steele Street, Denver CO 80210 with reception to follow.

Contributions may be made to Swallow Hill, 71 E Yale Ave, Denver, CO 80210 303 777-1003.
