On Tuesday, January 18, 2022, Ilene Susan Stevenson, loving wife and mother of two children, passed away at the age of 76 in Englewood, Colorado.
Ilene was born on April 1, 1945 in New York City to Jules Herstone and Virginia Shanahan. She grew up in New Jersey where she graduated in the top 5 of her High School class. She went on to graduate with honors from the College of Education at the University of Maryland. She then moved to California to teach elementary school in the Watts neighborhood of southern Los Angeles where she met her partner in life Larry Scott Stevenson. They were married on November 28, 1971 and settled in Steamboat Springs, Colorado where they raised their daughter Erin and son Nate. In Steamboat Ilene continued her career in education as a reading teacher at Soda Creek Elementary where she helped shape the lives of countless students.
Ilene was a lover of dance and theater. She enjoyed reading just as much as she enjoyed teaching kids to read, and had a passion for travel that took her across much of the United States, as well as to Latin America, Asia and Europe in recent years.
Ilene was preceded in death by her husband, Larry. She is survived by her daughter Erin Stevenson, son Nate Stevenson (Teri), sister Margery Moreno (Vinnie), and brother Michael Herstone (Shelly)
A service will be held on Thursday, January 27th at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver, Colorado at 3:15 pm. For those attending please gather in staging area C. The service will be followed by a celebration of her life at the clubhouse of Ilene’s home at Dry Creek Crossing (9099 East Panorama Circle, Centennial, Colorado). Flowers may be sent to Fort Logan National Cemetery on January 27th with attention to Ilene Stevenson at 3.15, staging area C. Donations can be made in her honor to the Rocky Mountain Chapter of the ALS Association, an organization that impacted the lives of both Ilene and her late husband Larry tremendously and that she held dear to her heart.
