Harry Mathews, Ii

May 8, 1954 — January 20, 2012

Harry Vincent Mathews II, 57, passed from this mortal existence of an apparent heart attack on January 20, 2012 in his apartment in Denver, Colorado, just weeks after his beloved mother passed away. Vincent was born on May 8, 1954, Mother's Day, in El Paso, TX, to Billy Vincent and Celia Carbajal Mathews. The family moved to Denver, CO when Vincent was 4 years old where he attended Teller Elementary, Gove Jr. High, and East High School, graduating in 1972. He was always proud to have graduated from the same high school as his paternal grandmother. He was a rascal for some of his teachers at school and at church, but most grew to appreciate his intelligence, cleverness, and sense of humor. He played the baritone, was a Boy Scout and a very patriotic individual, and loved his dogs, Pug, and Adolph. At age 15 he won a Ford Maverick from a drawing at a Texaco service station! He began working diligently at King Soopers grocery store to pay for the expenses associated with owning a car.
At age 19, Vincent served a successful 2-year voluntary mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in London, England, after which he completed his Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice from Brigham Young University, also earning minors in Sociology and in Spanish. He moved to California where he met and married Audrey Haggard. The marriage gave Vincent one of his greatest joys – a daughter, Desirée. Vincent was a successful life insurance adjuster and later moved back to Denver where health problems prevented him from achieving the work success he desired. He sought to learn more about his Mathews family history and enthusiastically shared all he had learned. He enjoyed listening to radio talk shows and oftentimes called in to make commentary on the current topic. He honored his mother often with beautiful flowers. Vincent was extremely generous with all that he had, and was a gracious recipient of care given to him for the things he could not do for himself.
He is survived by his daughter, Desirée Olen Call, 2 granddaughters & 2 grandsons, Roseville, CA, his sister, Gale Alan Larson, Provo, UT, and brother, Gary Laura Mathews, Tijeras, NM, as well as 4 nephews, 2 nieces, 6 great nephews, and 4 great nieces, with another due on August 16th. He was preceded in death by his mother, Celia Carbajal Mathews, Dec. 14, 2011, and his father, Billy Vincent Mathews, November 5, 2006.
The family wishes to express gratitude to the many kind friends, supporters, and ecclesiastical leaders who helped Vincent each day. Vincent knew that what Jesus Christ taught was true, and that Christ loved him. We rejoice knowing he is happily free from earthly struggles and he has returned to his parents and other beloved ancestors in his heavenly home.
A memorial service will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 6705 S. Webster Street Littleton, CO 80128, on Saturday, June 30, 2012 at 10:00am. Burial of his ashes will take place on Sunday, July 1, 2012, in Paonia, CO, next to Mathews ancestors.
