Elsbeth Anctil

March 16, 1925 — February 18, 2015

Elsbeth (Beth) Anctil, 89, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, passed away peacefully on February 18, 2015. Beth always had a smile for everyone and her life was a testament to friendship, giving and resilience.

Born in Buffalo, New York, Beth faced her first challenge early in life when she lost her mother at a young age. As a result, she and her brother, Dick, developed a very close relationship growing up and it remained so throughout their lives. After Amherst High School, Beth attended DePauw University, graduating with a degree in Chemistry and Mathematics. Following graduation, she moved to Aspen, Colorado where she met and married the love of her life, Ralph. They celebrated 64 years of marriage in 2014.

Beth was a loving mother to her two sons, Matthew and John, who died tragically when in college. She worked tirelessly to teach them life lessons in a supportive family environment and to make a wonderful life for them full of experiences and opportunities to develop independence, interests and skills. Later in life, Beth basked in being a grandmother to her granddaughter Katie, in whom she took great joy and pride.

Beth's character reflected her life's geographic journey - the sophistication of the East, the warmth of the Midwest and the independence of the West. She was a testament to the capacity of the human spirit, through traits she embodied throughout her life. Resilient, she never complained and kept moving in a positive direction regardless of circumstance. Courageous, she never shied away from life's challenges, instead tackling them head on. Loving, she was a great friend with caring and a smile for all. Giving, she always gave more than she received whether in friendship, family or charity. Improving, through ingenuity and creativity, she had the ability to make the best of any situation and take the common or worn and make it special. And finally, learning, a true renaissance woman, Beth always found joy in learning and had a willingness to try new things.

Beth's passions were gardening, art, reading, bridge, movies, music and cooking and they were embodied in a life rich in varied experiences. She was a Master Gardener, featured in the Chicago Times for her use of xeriscaping, served as Director of the Nevada Art Museum, appeared on CNBC along with her investment club and pursued cross-country skiing later in life.

Beth was active in civic and volunteer activities throughout her life including co-founding the Denver Junior League's Garden Club, serving as a docent at the Denver Art Museum, volunteering at ARC thrift stores and active involvement with the League of Women Voters.

One of Beth's special qualities was her sense of style. She had impeccable taste in decorating, clothing and art and a natural talent with colors and entertaining. Whether it was cooking family meals or hosting a meal for friends, Beth was an excellent cook. Among her favorite culinary traditions was making her famous Christmas cookies to share with family and friends. She had a world-class sweet tooth, particularly for butterscotch, and loved a glass of champagne.

All who knew Beth feel a great admiration for a life well lived and gratitude for the joy, kindness and love she brought to the lives of those she touched.

Beth is survived by her son Matthew, granddaughter Katherine, daughter-in law Suzanne and extended family. Beth was preceded in death by her husband Ralph, son John and brother Dick. A celebration of Beth's life was held in May 2015. Donations in her honor to the Second Wind Fund would be welcome.
