Dr. Dyer

February 27, 1936 — September 5, 2018

Dr. Donald F. Dyer passed into heaven on September 5, 2018. He was 82. He died peacefully at home surrounded by his children and grandchildren during his last months of life.
Dr. Dyer was born in Oklahoma City, OK on February 27, 1936. He was an only child and his father, looking for work moved the family to Salt Lake City and then eventually settled the family in the San Francisco Bay Area. Donald attended Bay Area schools from junior high to receiving his Master of Education from the College of Holy Names and his Doctor of Education from Lincoln University in San Francisco.
In 1960 he married Lucinda Dyer. He began his career as an elementary school teacher and progressed to Assistant Superintendent of the Richmond Unified School District (now renamed the West Contra Costa County Unified School District) where he headed fifty-six elementary schools. These were racially charged times and Dr. Dyer had a soft spot for the underdog. He was known for his fairness and equity for all, even if some of his actions and appointments caused controversy.
In 1990, Donald and Lucinda relocated to the Los Angeles area to be closer to their three adult daughters and grandchildren. Dr. Dyer was hired by the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and greatly enjoyed his move into private Catholic education, accepting the position as principal of St. Catherine of Siena elementary school in Reseda, CA. Until the day he passed away he would fondly reminisce about the parish, the people and his tenure there.
Dr. Dyer retired in 2002 and he and Lucinda moved to the Nashville, TN area to again be near their adult children and grandchildren. Lucinda passed away in 2009, just prior to their 50th wedding anniversary. Heartbroken, Donald missed her every day but bravely carried on until Sept. 2018.
Of all his accomplishments, Dr. Donald F. Dyer will be remembered best by his family for his sacrificial love for his wife, children and grandchildren. He loved people and genuinely enjoyed conversing and learning about their travels, life experiences and personal stories. Dr. Dyer is survived by daughters and sons-in-law Ralph & Elsa Nine and Bart & Sonja Williams, daughter Linda Dyer, and grandchildren Grant & Rachel Leonardi and Austin Linnea & Allee Williams.
A Life Celebration Service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 22 at the Pavilion Church, 612 W. Due West Ave., Madison, TN 37115.
