Dorothy Alice Kurdt was born on April 8, 1931 in Kingston, New York. She died peacefully at about 9:30 p.m. on Monday, December 6, 2021 in Denver, Colorado.
Dotty, as she preferred to be called, was a fiercely stubborn, bold and independent woman. To say she was a unique, quirky soul would be an understatement. Her laughter came easily, sometimes indelicately and often without mercy!
She was passionate about horses, cowboys, westerns, the American Southwest and Native American culture. She was skilled at all manner of handicrafts, especially crochet, and was a voracious reader who had gathered a substantial library on a fascinating array of topics.
Dotty provided for her family in a variety of ways; as a bookkeeper, a short-order cook, a social worker and a factory worker. In her own words, her greatest accomplishment was raising five kids to adulthood who were all productive members of society. And this is quite true.
She adored her nine grandkids and, while she was still able, wouldn’t hesitate to drive hundreds of miles to spend time with them. She traveled extensively, and for years her constant companion and sister spirit was an Aussie Shepherd mix named Pogo.
Before dementia robbed her of her ability to recognize loved ones, Dotty always made time for family adventures, be they road trips, holidays, movies, meals (around the table or at a drive-up window), or merely for conversation, whether profound or extremely silly.
As she declined with Alzheimer’s, she lived for several years with her daughter Sharon and her family before moving into a wonderful memory care home, Ashley Manor in Aurora, where she spent the last two and a half years receiving abundant love and care.
She leaves behind many hilarious stories and is fondly remembered by family and friends. There are no memorial services planned, but if moved to do so, please share your thoughts and memories of Dotty in the comments section below.
