Donald R. Anderson, age 63, passed away at Foothills Hospital in Boulder, Colorado on January 10th, 2022, of heart complications.
Born in 1958, Don grew up in Deerfield, IL. Growing up he loved animals, cars, skiing, playing hockey, and the outdoors. After graduating from Deerfield High School in 1977, Don’s love of the outdoors and skiing lead him to Wyoming where he attended Powell Community College. He graduated with a degree in art. Don worked at several ski resorts in WY and CO, allowing him to travel during the summer months, which was his main passion. He enjoyed learning about and experiencing different cultures. Don eventually settled in Boulder CO. He was hired at Sundown Saloon.
After bartending, Don worked for the University of Colorado-Boulder in Grounds Management. Don enjoyed gardening and landscaping, so it was the perfect job for him. After over 20 years of working at the University, Don retired in October of 2020.
Because Don enjoyed gardening so much, he and his uncle, Fred Liedtke, volunteered to maintain a garden plot for the city of Boulder, planting new flowers each spring. After working in the garden plot, Don and Uncle Fred would refresh themselves at Murphy’s South, where he had many friends, everybody knew his name.
One of Don’s favorite holidays was the 4th of July. Don loved doing fireworks displays for his family at his parents’ home on Pretty Lake in Wisconsin. His nieces and nephew always had fun helping him light up the sky. Don had a big heart and cared about people less fortunate than him.
Because Don was such a social person, the pandemic was hard for him. In March of 2021 there was a mass shooting at his grocery store in Boulder. This took a toll on his mental health.
Survivors include his brother Roger (Kitty) Anderson in Hainesville, IL, sisters Laura (Layne) Pitt, Menomonie WI, Mary (Brett) Harrison, Santa Barbara CA, and Susan Loreth, Menomonie WI. His nieces and nephews-Elizabeth, Tegan, Taylor, Ali Pitt, Tom, Mary, Pat Anderson, Lexi, Sarah and Jessica Loreth. Don was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Nancy Anderson.
