Denny Lee Wormington

Born November 17, 1955 to the late Rayburn and Lorena Wormington of Purdy, Missouri, Denny learned the value of hard work growing up on a dairy farm and was infused with the Christian spirit that makes all work in God’s service noble. Denny relied on that faith to guide him through what he called "Hand of God Moments." Looking back, he realized those moments were the many times when he made the right choice. It was clear that someone greater than he was guiding Denny along life’s path.

Denny’s faith took on greater meaning when he experienced one such moment while teaching Sunday school. On the wall he spied a poster that read "teach them in the way they should go and as they get older they shall not depart from it." As one of God’s children Denny believed that while we might stray from God’s path during life’s journey the foundation will always help bring us back.

Denny’s life journey included an engineering degree from the University of Missouri which landed him a job at John Deere in Waterloo, Iowa.  Drawn to the Southwest, he earned an MS in Operations Management from Texas Tech University.  This degree led him to New Mexico where he helped Intel build the micro engines that run today’s cyber world.

Denny loved the outdoors, especially fly fishing, a skill he learned in 1987 through the patience and tutelage of his dear friend “the colonel” (Jim Page). He shared this love with his nephew, Nathan Cantrell, who then shared it with others fighting cancer until he lost his own battle with the disease in 2018.

It was in New Mexico that Denny experienced his most enduring “Hand of God Moment.” He met Patty Peery and she became his bride. Denny and Patty learned so much from each other, and grew into better people together during their 31 years of marriage. Denny found Patty to be the kindest, sweetest person he ever met; she was a constant source of support and spiritual guidance. Denny’s consistent and steady pragmatism helped guide their marriage through many challenges, but it was his dry wit and sense of fun that added joy and laughter to their lives. It is said that “as God Made them, he matched them.” Denny and Patty were, and still are, the perfect match.

From that match grew a family including one grandchild who Denny helped raise after his retirement. Alie was one of the biggest joys of Denny and Patty’s life together as were their children Sara Skinner and Raye Wormington. He also loved and supported many nieces and nephews on both sides of the family, and has been lovingly referred to as Grunkle Denny by the next generation (for great uncle).

Denny is also survived by his son-in-law Stephen Skinner, sisters Debra Ferrell (Albuquerque) and Dana (and Dave) Creek (Springdale, AR), step-mother Kathy Wormington (Purdy), and step-brothers Kip Cullers (Purdy) and Courtney Cullers (Aurora, MO).

Denny passed away from brain cancer in the early morning hours of November 5, 2019, a dozen days shy of his 64th birthday. He leaves a wonderful family, scores of friends and hundreds of lives he touched with the way he lived in faith during life’s journey.

His journey was well-lived, well-loved and well done by a good and faithful servant of Christ. Amen.
