Daniel Jay McDonald was born in Rapid City, South Dakota on July 2, 1955, to Charlotte and Robert McDonald as the youngest of five children. Because he was born on July 2nd, he thought Independence Day fireworks were for his birthday.
He lived most of his formative years in Hill City, South Dakota where he met life-long friends. After graduating from Hill City High School in 1973, he lived in a number of places before enrolling at Blackhawk Technical Institute in Janesville, Wisconsin where he certified in welding. After a short stint at Beloit Corporation he moved back to Rapid City where he met the love of his life, Sandy.
Dan and Sandy were married in Rapid City in 1983 and enjoyed 36 years together until his death on January 18, 2020. God gifted them with a child, Joseph McDonald, in 1995. Dan went to every baseball and hockey game he could. Over the years, Dan and Sandy brought in wonderful young people into their home, "adopting them" until they could get out on their own. Dan had a huge heart.
Joe married Bailey Grimes in 2018 and on April 18, 2019, a beautiful baby boy was born, Colton Joseph McDonald. Dan was a proud Grandpa!
Dan was a man of many talents. He was a welder, firefighter, paramedic, retail home center manager and finally a glazier. Dan retired in 2017 and enjoyed hanging out at the house, going to Home Depot, and texting and calling many of us while we were still working. Dan was also a man of many tools and could either fix or figure out a modification for anything that needed his attention.
Dan loved to make people laugh and tried to keep everyone around him light-hearted.
Dan McDonald is preceded in death by his mother Charlotte (Stoner) McDonald, father Robert McDonald, brother Mike McDonald, sisters Janelle Smith and Doneen Miller. Dan is survived by his wife Sandra (Engle) McDonald, brother Ron McDonald, and son Joseph McDonald and grandson Colton McDonald of Greeley, CO.
Dan, you will be sorely missed, especially your humor, big heart, and willingness to help. God speed Mr. McDonald. We love you!!
