Catherine Ann Abegg (Piccone) Hall was born on March 12th, 1923 in Alliance, Nebraska to Frank and Mary Ann (Mae Newberry) Abegg. She passed away peacefully at age 94 in Denver, Colorado having led a long, happy and remarkable life. She grew up in Alliance, Nebraska and moved to Denver, Colorado where she graduated from Cathedral High School in 1941. She then attended Nursing School in both Denver and Grand Junction, Colorado and worked in hospitals during her early working years.
She was always a wonderful cook and followed that calling working at Rocky Mountain Osteopathic Hospital in Denver, at Camp Rosalie in Bailey and Camp Geneva Glen in Indian Hills all in Colorado. During her long tenure in these positions, she both touched and inspired individuals at the hospital and the young people she worked with at the camps.
Catherine was a talented seamstress and used her extensive skills to create and maintain clothing for her family and friends. Additionally, she taught members of her extended family and friends to sew, knit and crochet. Her passion, however, was in quilting and she was involved in several volunteer groups with her caring friends who got together to create quilts for families, friends and for groups who utilized them to bring comfort and warmth to those who might need them. The quilts she made for the police and fire departments and for local hospital neo-natal units is legendary. Catherine was always an artist whether with dry goods or water colors and proudly presented each of her children with both their own unique quilt and a treasured painting she had done especially for them. She also enjoyed reading, knitting and especially spending time with her extended family and many friends.
One of her special projects was the work she did with Doctors Abroad; volunteer health professionals who traveled to underserved and needy countries to provide medical assistance wherever needed. Her contribution here was to make hand sewn individual teddy bears for the doctors to give to any child to whom they provided care. These activities provide a small picture of her generous spirit and her philosophy to put the needs of others ahead of her own. She always found time and resources to feed any and everyone as well.
Catherine had a passion for watching and betting on horse racing. She loved to go to the races, watch them on TV or join her family at a local OTB establishment to place a bet or two on that mystic Grey horse to place.
Catherine is survived by three (3) siblings, John (Jerry). Lillibeth and Peggy, and by 10 children. They are Michael Piccone (Brenda) of Tucson, AZ, Marsha Hevel (Ron) of Rapid City, SD, Frank Piccone (Darlene) of Ft Myers, FL, Stephanie Piccone of Denver, CO, James Piccone (Pam) of Arvada, CO, Sandra Ross of Littleton, CO, Mariono Piccone of Ft.
