Carmen Gloria Caballero Waddell

Carmen Gloria Caballero-Waddell, aged 81 of Smyrna, TN passed peacefully on April 11, 2024. 

Born on February 2, 1943, in Guyama, Puerto Rico, Carmen was the cherished Daughter of Gloria Delgado and Humberto Caballero. She was lovingly cared for by her Aunt Micaela Caballero Bernard, whom Carmen fondly referred to as “Mami”. 

Growing up, Carmen displayed remarkable intelligence and strength; always standing up for her siblings and excelling academically, while graduating ahead of her peers. Following high school, she earned her associate's degree from Percy Business College in Ponce, Puerto Rico. 

In 1963, Carmen embarked on a fulfilling career as a flight attendant, then promoted as Pursor for Pan American Airlines based in Queens, NY. During a flight in 1965, Carmen met Richard, who became her beloved husband. Together they made their home in Ringwood, NJ. And God blessed them with three children. 

In the 1970s, Carmen and Richard relocated to South Florida. After retiring from Pan Am in 1976, Carmen devoted her time to community involvement. She served as the President of the Broward County Democratic Hispanic Latin Club, while also running for Cooper City Council. She cherished many moments with friends at the Cooper City Country Club. She enjoyed creating ceramics with her best friend Karen, as well as taking part in the planning and zoning committee. And above all else, being supportive of her children’s interests and activities.  

Carmen was preceded in death by her Father Humberto Caballero, birth Mother Gloria Caballero, “Mami” Micaela Caballero Bernard, Brother Carlos Caballero, oldest Sister Luz Esther Caballero, and her children’s Father, Richard Waddell. 

Carmen is survived by her loving children Lisa (Robert), Ricky, and Sherri (Galen), Grandson Tyler, Brothers Humberto, and Luisito, younger Sisters Luz Esther, Rosie, Tere, Isabel, Luisita and Leonilda, numerous nieces, nephews, and a host of other family members whom she adored. 

Carmen's vibrant spirit and zest for life will always be remembered. She was the life of the party. Her unwavering love for her family and her commitment to living authentically were hallmarks of her character. Her Grandson Tyler was the apple of her eye. Their relationship was beautiful to watch. 

 In her final hours she left her kids with this message: “Don’t be sad"; "Smile"; "Be happy.” 

A service honoring Carmen's life will take place in Tennessee at St. Luke’s Catholic Church, followed by a Celebration of Life. Details regarding the date and time of the services are forthcoming.
