Beverly A. Black

1927 - 2018

Beverly A. Black was born to Roy Lee and Billye Irene Wilson, February 11, 1927. She passed of natural causes on May 30, 2018 at Avamere Brighton Care Center.

Beverly was born in Sioux City, Iowa. The family moved to St. Joseph, Missouri for work. During high school she met the love of her life, Melvin John Black. Melvin enlisted in the US Marine Corp July 1, 1943. They were married one month after his discharge, March 15, 1946 in St. Joseph. Together they raised four children: Lucinda (Cindy) Irene; Dennis Wilson; Melva Anne and John Roy.

In 1961 they moved to Springfield, Missouri. Beverly was mostly a loving wife and mom, but also worked as a realtor for several years and then at J. C. Penney's for thirteen years in the jewelry and cosmetic departments. She was a natural born salesperson and loved making people happy. She was a member of Kingsway United Methodist Church and Schweitzer United Methodist Church for many years and cherished the friends, who became like family. They loved to play bridge, entertain and travel. She and Melvin retired to Mesa, Arizona where they were eventually joined by Melvin's brothers Marvin and Paul, and their wives.

Beverly moved to Colorado in 1991 and resided with her daughter Melva's family in Littleton. In 2001 they moved to Brighton, Colorado. She continued to travel the world and play bridge with new and old friends. She was a member of Brighton United Methodist Church.

The term "spitfire" was used to describe Beverly by most who knew her. She collected pretty things (and wore most of them). She could play a mean game of bridge, pinochle and gin rummy. If you were her friend, you were a friend for life. She wore hats to church, drove a shiny, red, convertible, loved to cook and perpetuated "cocktails at 5:00" each night. She taught her grandson, Jared, to play golf in return for him teaching her about football and the Broncos. She was happiest when surrounded by family, and loved her grandchildren and great grandchildren to distraction. She was an avid reader and tried to make sense out of a world that was making less and less sense every day. She was rarely at a loss for words and wasn't afraid to speak them. She had a deep respect for family and love for Christ. Not always comfortable as a public speaker, but when she testified to the Lord her message was clear: God loves a happy giver. So give and give more; love and love more.

Beverly is preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother Bill, daughter Cindy and son John.

She is survived by her sister Glenda Kay, son Dennis, daughter Melva, eight grandchildren, Todd , Michael, Mark, Jessica, Jared, Amanda, Nicholas and Katie and eight great grandchildren.

Memorial service will be 11:00 AM, Tuesday, June 12, at Brighton United Methodist Church. The family requests donations in lieu of flowers. Beverly Black Memorial Fund contributions may be left at the church or mailed to 14405 N. Maywood Ct., Brighton, CO 80603. An internment service will be held in August at Springfield National Cemetery.
