Anthony John Montoya, lovingly known as “Juan Antonio,” passed away peacefully on January 4, 2025, in Rio Rancho, NM, at the age of 71. Born on May 21, 1953, in Jaroso, Colorado, Anthony lived a life defined by devotion to his family, service to his country, and unwavering kindness to all.

Anthony is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Barbara, and their sons Jeremiah (spouse Lisa) and Christopher (spouse Mark). He was a proud grandfather to Alex (spouse Sara), Regan, and Esther, and a cherished great-grandfather to Peyton, Jayson, and Remington. 

He also leaves behind his siblings Donald, Gloria, Priscilla (spouse Pat), and Inez (spouse Raul). He is preceded in death by his parents, Juan and Vincentita Montoya, and siblings Amadeo, Larry, Joe, Nena, Ignacita, Estrelia, Serafin, Adelina, Gilbert, and Orlando.

A retired veteran of the United States Air Force, Anthony dedicated his life to serving his country with honor. After his military career, he continued his commitment to community and service through his work with the U.S. Postal Service.

Anthony’s passions were as rich and vibrant as his life. He had a deep love for all kinds of music, with a special fondness for Mexican and New Mexican styles, which brought joy to his days. A craftsman at heart, Anthony enjoyed tinkering in his workshop, often creating thoughtful gifts and solving problems with his skilled hands. Whether building or listening to music, he found beauty and creativity in everything he did.

Known for his sharp humor and boundless generosity, Anthony could always be found with a cup of coffee in hand, ready to share stories and laughter with those around him. He had a special way of connecting with people, making every conversation meaningful and memorable.

Anthony was devoted to his family, including his extended relatives, and took pride in the love and connections he nurtured throughout his life. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren held a special place in his heart, and he cherished every moment spent with them. 

Anthony and Barbara’s love story began in 1972, and their partnership remained a testament to enduring love and commitment. His legacy of kindness, service, and devotion to family will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

In honor of Anthony’s memory, a family gathering will be held in the spring at their home in Fort Garland, Colorado, to celebrate his life before he is laid to rest.
