A woman with many blessings and virtues, Agatha Eufrasia Chavez, age 94, passed away in Santa Fe on Saturday, June 16, 2018, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on March 20, 1924 to Transito Sanchez and Erinea (Duran) Sanchez in Duran, New Mexico, a city she valued for its close-knit community, dances, and many festivals held throughout the year. On March 7, 1952, Agatha married Alfonso Chavez, a man of strong character and dynamic personality. Together, they had five children. Agatha was a devoted Catholic, a parishioner of St. Anne’s Church in Santa Fe, as well as a periodic caretaker of San Juan de Baptista Church in Duran, NM. Her special interests and hobbies included raising a family and being surrounded by little children, some her own grandchildren and great-grandchildren, but also those whom she helped raised as a loving in-home childcare provider for many years. She also possessed a beautiful physical presentation, being handsome and a smart, fashionable dresser, inspiring these qualities in others. Left to honor Agatha and remember her love are her five children: Helen (Dewey) Smith, David (Lydia) Chavez, Herman Chavez, Louie (Valerie) Chavez, and Annabella Chavez; ten grandchildren: Drucilla (Mike) Smith, Travis (Krystall) Smith, Jason (Brandi) Chavez, William (Liz) Chavez, Emily Chavez, Kim Rivera, Kalene Rivera, Victoria (Hunter) Chomer, Monique Portillo, and Christian Duran; twelve great-grandchildren: Kai Smith-Crain, George Fox Smith, Kai Chavez, Amni Chavez, Neila Chavez, DeAnzea Apodaca, Robert Sandoval, Olivia Chomer, Shane Chomer, Quiara Dunn, Giovanni Jenkins, and Ace Jenkins; and many nieces and nephews. Agatha was preceded in death by her parents; husband; siblings Abel, Tony, Chris, Elenita, and Millie; and daughter-in-law Valerie Chavez Vigil.
In terms of memorial services for Agatha, a rosary will be held on Sunday night, July 22nd, at 7:30 p.m. at St. Anne Catholic Church in Santa Fe, as well as a funeral Mass the following morning on Monday, July 23rd at 9:00 a.m, also at St. Anne’s, followed by a brief inturnment at Santa Fe National Cemetery (Section 10) at 10:30 a.m.
Finally, the Chavez family would like to extend our gratitude to all the staff at Ambercare Hospice for their attentiveness and loving care.
